Making jam was not a difficult process as I had been thinking..It need very few ingredients and you get fresh homemade jam without the preservatives and high sugar content as present in the store bought ones..They are cost effective too..I prepared this plum jam when plums were in season and found in bounty in the grocery store..Here comes the recipe for basic plum jam. This recipe can be used making berries and almost any fruit jam.
Ingredients
Plums - 1kg
Sugar - 2 cups
Lemon juice - 3 tablespoons
Water - 2 cups
Directions
Wash the plums thoroughly and chop them roughly..
In a heavy bottomed pan, add the water and plums and bring to a boil.Use a wooden spoon so that it is easy to handle even if it gets hot..Allow them to cook until tender. Mash well and add the sugar. The sugar quantity can be increased or decreased depending on the tartness of the fruit. Also add the lemon juice..
Simmer for around or half an hour or until the water evaporates and the jam thickens and set well.Allow it to cool and refrigerate in glass containers. Can be stored for almost a year..
Great with bread or toast..

ReplyDeleteSimple and delicious, the way I like it!
ReplyDeleteI used to make a similar jam from my japanese plums before the tree got sick and died. I found I had to put low methoxyl pectin in or it would be very soupy, but that I could sugar to my taste instead of the huge amounts of sugar necessary for regular jam pectin. I also ran it through the food processor before cooking because the family didn't like the little flakes of skin in the jam. but maybe my plums just had tough skin.
ReplyDeleteeheh` its so delicious..
